How to stop hair loss

Male pattern baldness, also known as androgenic alopecia (AGA), is very common. Two-thirds of American men have remarkable hair loss by the age of 35 and about 85% of men have significantly thinning hair by 50. A quarter of men start losing hair before age 21. The good news is that there are effective ways to stop hair loss.

Hair loss is a chemical process. The enzyme 5-alpha reductase converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT binds to hair follicle receptors and causes miniaturization. The hair follicles shrink, which reduces the hair growth phase. The hair is unable to grow so long or thick that it becomes finer and shorter until the follicles completely rest and the area is bare.

It’s not a question of too much testosterone or DHT. Hair follicles are genetically sensitive to DHT.

This process can be slowed down and sometimes even stopped altogether.

Do hair growth pills work?

Hair growth supplements are a growing trend, but do they work? While vitamin deficiencies, particularly iron and vitamin D, can contribute to hair loss, there is no evidence that dietary supplements can grow more or thicker hair.

Vitamin D stimulates hair growth, so inadequate vitamin D can slow down or stop hair growth. Iron is needed to produce hemoglobin in your blood. Hemoglobin carries oxygen for the growth and repair of cells in your body, including the cells that stimulate hair growth.

Hair loss due to vitamin D and iron deficiency is reversible. Vitamins and supplements can even help the hair reach its full potential, but as hair is not an essential part of the body, it is the last thing to benefit from vitamins. A healthy diet is sufficient to support hair growth.

Genetic hair loss due to male pattern baldness is a completely different process. Save your money and spend it on something that works.

How to stop hair loss

All scientifically proven ways to stop hair loss are chemical. While some people report results from natural alternatives, there are no guarantees.

These hair loss products are most effective in the earliest stages of thinning hair and balding, so do not waste time.

minoxidil . Finasteride and ketoconazole all are clinically proven to reduce hair loss and can promote new growth for most men. These treatments can be used individually or even more effectively together. ON 2011 study by A.W. Rafi and R.M. Katz came to the conclusion that “Aggressive treatment of AGA allows significant and rapid growth of new hair”.

2011 A.W. Rafi and R.M. Katz. Used a combination of Rogaine, Propecia and ketoconazole.

Minoxidil (Rogaine) is a topical application that stimulates follicles to grow new and more hair. Finasteride (Propecia) attacks the cause of hair loss by reducing DHT levels. Ketoconazole is an antifungal that cleanses the scalp and promotes hair growth.

Remember that all these treatments need to be continued to get results. Termination of minoxidil, finasteride or ketoconazole leads to hair loss.

Minoxidil (Rogaine)

The topical medication Minoxidil or Rogaine may be the best known hair growth product. Its ability to increase and regenerate hair growth capacity is supported by substantial evidence.

Minoxidil is actually an antihypertensive drug that dilates the blood vessels and increases blood flow. It was originally used as a blood pressure medication, but had an unexpected side effect, hair growth.

Minoxidil is thought to shorten the hair cycle (telogen) and prolong the growth phase (anagen), turning miniaturized hair follicles associated with age-related genetic hair loss into thicker hair.

While almost 90% of men experience hair regrowth after 4 months of 5% Rogaine Foam, Minoxidil is most effective in people with a lot of hair, especially many follicles in the thinning telogen phase. After 5 years of rest it is unlikely that hair growth will be activated.

The best time to start is in the beginning or intermediate stages of balding, during the 20s or 30s. Any regrowth of hair disappears as soon as the application of Minoxidil is interrupted.

Finasteride (Propecia)

Do you stop hair loss with one pill a day? Sounds like a dream, but it is reality. The drug Finasteride, marketed under the brand names Propecia and Proscar, has been shown to reduce scalp DHT, the leading cause of hair loss, by up to 60%. Propecia works for 86% of the men and is the best hair loss treatment recommended by the American Hair Loss Association ,

Finasteride is one of the few treatments that works on the entire head. It has been proven to stop hair loss and hair loss on the temples. The recipe can be used at any stage of hair loss.

Disadvantages to prevent hair loss from oral medications are minimal. The cost of visiting a doctor to get a prescription is one. Then there is the price of the drug. Name brand Propecia is more expensive than the generic Proscar. Only 2% of users report negative side effects.

Ketoconazole (Nizoral)

Ketoconazole is an anti-fungal drug. How does an anti-fungal hair loss stop? Ketoconazole effectively treats pityriasis, a common scalp fungus, and can prevent hair loss by reducing the inflammation of the fungus. Ketoconazole also seems to have a role in the Inhibition of 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT.

A 1998 study showed similar improvements in hair density, size and percentage of anagenic follicles in both 2% ketoconazole and 2% minoxidil.

Therefore, a ketoconazole shampoo is an effective adjunct to hair loss treatments, including minoxidil finasteride.

For hair loss products it is added to shampoo or conditioner in a concentration of 1% or 2%. Higher doses are available by prescription. The most popular brand name is Nizoral, a dandruff shampoo, but it is also available in other dandruff and hair loss products.

Ketoconazole may dry out on the scalp, so use according to manufacturer’s instructions. More use is not more effective. However, 2% solutions are more effective against hair loss than 1%.
